Olly answers our competition winners questions
Olly (Oliver) Murs is an English singer-songwriter, born on 14TH May 1984 in Essex. Murs was schooled at Howbridge Junior School, Witham and Notley Highschool, Braintree and played football for Witham FC before retiring due to injury. He then became a recruitment consultant in his home town.
The first that the world saw of Murs’ musical talent was in 2009 when he appeared on the hit reality music show The X-Factor. This became the platform from which he launched his music career, finishing as runner-up to Joe McElderry. Olly went on to sing in the post-competition X-Factor tour along with other finalists and competitors including Jedward, Stacey Soloman and Joe McElderry.
He would later present the spin-off show, The Xtra-Factor for two seasons.
Olly Murs signed to Simon Cowell’s Syco Music and Epic Records in February of 2010.
His debut single was ”Please Don’t Let Me Go”, released on August 27th of that year. It was penned by the artist in collaboration with other writers. Against all the odds, the track beat Katy Perry’s ”Teenage Dream”, which was released on the same day, to debut at number one on the UK Singles Chart. “This One’s for the Girls” was his B-side and second single.
Olly Murs released his debut album that November, which was self-titled. It exploded onto the UK Albums Chart at second spot and 11th on the Irish Albums Chart. His second single was released a few days later, titled “Thinking of Me”. After featuring on the renowned Radio 1 playlist and being performed by Murs on The X-Factor, the single peaked at 4th and 13th in the UK and Ireland, respectively.
”Heart Skips a Beat” is the lead single from his second album. The song which features the vocals of Rizzle Kicks, hit top spot on the UK Single Chart. It also reached number one in Switzerland and Germany. The second pre-album single ”Dance With Me Tonight” also hit top spot. The second studio album was titled “In Case You Didn’t Know” was released 7 days later, charting on the album charts at 1st and 2nd in Britain and Ireland, respectively.
Murs has two post-album release singles, ”Oh My Goodness”, released in April 2012 and I’m OK which is due for a July release.
He has received a number of accolades, including Favourite British Male Artist at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, Best Male Artist at the BT Digital Music Awards and Best Album at the Radio One Teen Awards.
