Barbados – Sun, sea sand and home to one of the biggest names in RnB – Rihanna. While a majority of her young life was spent on the island, she moved over to the US in her teens to pursue her career in music. And when Jay Z comes knocking you don’t say no. The head of Def Jam was impressed by her audition that she was immediately signed up for a multi album contract with the label with the Shaun Carter taking her under his wings. By this time she had already written her hit Pon de Replay.
The track was released as a single from her debut album, Music Under The Sun. While none of the other hits reached the same heights as the lead single, it didn’t have a negative impact and she headed back to the studio to record her second album. The singles began to have global appeal with hits charting on both sides of the Atlantic including – S.O.S, Unfaithful, and We Ride amongst them. The appeal led to her first foray in to performing for large audiences with a her self titled debut tour.
A new production team in place Rihanna embarked on the development of her 3rdstudio album, Good Girl Gone Bad, and it ended up raining number 1’s when the lead single Umbrella was released. It ended up being another multi territory success story for the babe from the Bahamas. Further hits ensued including Shut Up And Drive. If the dancefloor weren’t jumping to her music already, she released the monster hit Don’t Stop The Music as well.
She started being involved in a number of promotional campaigns for her home country during this period, primarily for the Tourism Board. Her third album involved a reprise of Good Girl Gone Bad with a number of hits added including the Disturbia.
In 2009, Rihanna was at the centre of an abuse controversy when she appeared to have been struck by her boyfriend at the time Chris Brown. Brown was charged and received a restraining order.
Following this Rihanna returned to the music scene with a collaboration with Shaun Carter on the track Run This Town, and her next album Rated R. Rude Boy emerged has the main track from the album while Run This Town gave her first taste of Grammy success when it scooped the top rap awards.
Rihanna versatile music style has lent her to work with artist from Kanye West to Eminem and John Legend to Elton John and most recently with British rock group Coldplay for Princess of China. The track was featured at the closing ceremony for the London 2012 Paralympics when she performed the track live.
