The Black Eyed Peas are an American hip-hop group. They were formed in Los Angeles in 1995 when William Adams and Allan Pineda rapped together in high school. The duo rapped as part of Atban Klann in Los Angeles clubs and in 1991 signed to Ruthless Records
Having been through a number of name changes including the Black Eyed Pods, In 1997, the group settled wiith calling themselves the Black Eyed Peas. Behind the Front was the title of the debut album with singer Kim Hill on vocals. Joints and Jam, released in November of that year, was the lead single was. The group’s second album, released in September a year later was titled Bridging the Gap. BEP Empire, Weekends and Request line were the 3 singles released.
Stacey “Fergie” Ferguson replaced Kim Hill as a permanent member due to Nicole Scherzinger’s being unable to join the band for the band’s third album release, Elephunk.
The lead single from the album was titled Where Is The Love and unofficially featured Justin Timberlake. The album reached number 15 on the US Billboard Hot 200 and charted in 2nd on the UK Albums Chart. Shut Up, the album’s second single was released on November 4th. It reached number one in 14 countries, including Australia, Ireland, Canada, Germany and France. The final single off the album, ‘Let’s Get It Started’ received a top 10 charting in five countries and in 2005 won a Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.
Don’t Phunk with My Heart the lead single of the group’s 4th album Monkey Business and was followed up with Don’t Lie. The band was influenced in to releasing ‘My Humps’ as a result of the strong radio airplay it received. It was originally written by Will.i.am for the Pussycat Dolls.
The band subsequently decided to take a break to pursue solo projects. Fergie recorded her first solo album, titled The Dutchess while Will.i.am went on to become Michael Jackson’s producer, starting on an album in 2006. The work stopped due to Jackson’s untimely death in 2009, the decision was taken not to release any songs.
In June 2009, the Black Eyed Peas released a comeback album, The E.N.D. The group’s 5th album reached 1st on the US Billboard 200 and 3rd on the UK Albums Chart. It produced the Black Eyed Peas’ first three number one American singles for Boom Boom Pow, I Gotta Feeling and Imma Be.
The Beginning was the Black Eyed Peas’ 6th studio album, released on the last day of November in 2010. This album also received widespread success, reaching 6th place on the US Billboard 200 and 8th on the UK albums Chart. It produced three widely successful singles; The Time, Just Can’t Get Enough and Don’t Stop the Party. .
After The Beginning, the band went on a second hiatus.
