Foo Fighters main main Dave Grohl has announced that his band will be heading into the studio to start work on a new album in September of this year following a two year-hiatus from the public eye.

Speaking at the Independent Spirit Movie Awards in LA at the weekend, Grohl acknowledged that writing had already started for the album, the Foo Fighter’s seventh, which follows on from 2007’s Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace.
Foo Fighters have just started writing and we’re going to start recording in September, so life is full of music,” he said, speaking after the awards ceremony where he presented the gong for Best Documentary to the members of struggling Canadian heavy rock band Anvil, whose story was recorded in a documentary of the same name.

“Every musician needs to see that movie,” said Grohl, who had been clearly touched by the band’s tale. “Whether you like their music or not, a lot of musicians could learn a valuable lesson from watching that movie.”

The 41-year-old former Nirvana drummer also spoke about his current side project, Them Crooked Vultures, and told reporters he would be over in the UK with the band very soon.

The super group, which sees Grohl return to drumming duties alongside Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age on guitar and Led Zeppelin legend John Paul Jones on bass, is headlining one of the Teenage Cancer Trust shows at London’s Albert Hall later this month. Other acts involved in the annual charity event are Depeche Mode, Suede, Arctic Monkeys, The Specials, JLS and Noel Gallagher.

Grohl urged fans to get along to the show: “I guarantee there’s no other band out there doing what we do. We play until we can’t play any more,” he said.

The band will also be playing the Download Festival on Friday 11 June before headliners AC/DC.
