Former Culture Club singer Boy George is back in the music business following a lengthy time away. George, whose real name is George O’Dowd, says he lost interest in music as he descended in drugs, much like he did in his 80s heyday. He also spent a period in jail for imprisoning and assaulting a male escort.

“I haven’t put anything out properly for a long time,” said George in a recent interview. “I’ve not done the professional thing for a while. It just was about time really.

“I’ve done a lot of procrastinating in the last few years. I had my drug addiction, which got in the way of everything to do with work. Since getting clean, it seems the natural thing to do.

“Probably over the last few years, if you’d have asked people exactly what I do, they probably would have said, ‘Oh, he gets arrested a lot.’

“So I wanted to remind people that I’m a musician and an entertainer.”

However, despite getting clean, George admits that he will have to be wary of not succumbing to the temptation again.

“It’s really about not putting yourself in risky situations. Most of the people that I’m friendly with are in recovery or they’re clean or they’ve never used at all.

“You’ve got to be careful. I’m an addict – it can happen at any time so you’ve got to stay away. And it’s difficult because there’s a lot of it around.

“But if you do find yourself in a situation where there are drugs being used you’ve just got to get out of Dodge.”

“I don’t think when you’re an addict you’re really aware of what you’re doing.

“It’s only in hindsight when you look back and you realise you were slowly poisoning yourself.

“Death is certainly where it can end up. At the time you don’t have perspective and you’re not able to be rational. You think you’re invincible.”

George’s new single, Amazing Grace is out on Monday and he has admitted his desire to team up with Lady Gaga some time soon.

“When I went to see her live, my favourite bit was she just sits down and does the piano and vocal thing,” he said.

“Certainly if we were going to do something like that – something quite emotional – I’d be very interested.

“We’ve met and it wasn’t discussed, but it was very brief. She was lovely. I signed a hat for her!”

Goldhawks have teamed up with MUZU.TV to offer one lucky fan a pair of tickets to their Headline gig at the Lexington in London on March 29th to celebrate the release of their new single ‘Where in the World‘. To win these tickets all you have to do is register on Muzu, become friends with Goldhawks, watch the Where in World video and answer a simple question. It only takes a few bars of Where In The World to tell you that you are in the presence of Big Music.
This west London five-piece are not in the business of half measures, not interested in anxious, apologetic, half-baked landfill indie. Goldhawks make their ambitions clear from the start: the giant opening guitar riff sets its cap at arenas, not the toilet circuit. The Where In The World video, shot over a freezing UK Christmas in Cornwall, features UK surf champion Seb Smart, braving the high seas intercut with the band performing.

American hip-hop mogul P Diddy, real name Sean Combs, is weighing up an offer for struggling south London football club Crystal Palace. The multi award-winning rapper and producer has a vast personal fortune estimated to be around £360 million, following a succession of hit records and a string of entrepreneurial spin-offs including a record label, clothing line, restaurants and acting roles.

However the 40 year-old New Yorker has apparently now declared his interest in adding soccer to that already extensive list and is looking at a couple of different options, including Premier League side Portsmouth who, like Crystal Palace, were recently placed in administration.

However for some reason it seems like the idea of Crystal Palace seems to be more attractive to Diddy, despite the fact that the bankrupt club is in chaos and facing relegation from the Coca-Cola Championship after having ten points docked for going into administration.

“Diddy was in London meeting football fixers a couple of weeks ago,” confirmed a source close to the New York superstar last night

“The finance is in place, he’s just deciding who he thinks he’ll make a bid for.
“Portsmouth were mentioned but he thought Palace were a better idea.

“He could cover their debt and bankroll a return to the Premier League. He liked the name as well.”

While former owner Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan was no rapper, he certainly wasn’t a stranger to the jet-set lifestyle so the fans will be used to the idea of flamboyant playboy owners who like a drop of bubbly.

Whether P Diddy will insist that the club’s name is changed to Cristal Palace – after the extravagant champagne popular in bling bling world – has yet to be confirmed, as have rumours regarding Snoop Dogg’s interest in Swindon Town.

Whether you’re knocking back the pints, chasing some snakes, or just chilling for the day why not check out our 5 favourite Irish acts for the craic and to enhance the Irish that’s in us all.

The Script

The Script on MUZU
The Script are an Irish trio whose music boasts the kind of artful twists sure to turn all preconceptions on their head. This is a whole new brand of Celtic Soul, blending hip hop lyrical flow with pop melodiousness, state-of-the-art R’n'B production with anthemic rock dynamics, classic song construction with gritty contemporary narratives. It’s got all the emotion and passion you would expect from across the Irish Sea, but it is glittering in its modernity, universal in its sing-along addictiveness and global in its syncopation, music for the feet, heart and head.

ASH

Ash on MUZU
From Downpatrick, Co. Down, Ash officially formed in 1992, reportedly having taken their name from the first word they liked in the dictionary. Inspired by Nirvana, Mudhoney, The Pixies and local punk rock gurus Lazergun Nun in their early days they played most weekends at dives in Belfast and Downpatrick, changing their reputation into a super-teen punk pop machine. Ultra-prolific songwriters, they fund countless demos with money saved by starving themselves during lunch break and an infamous tuck shop scam.

Adrian Crowley (born in Sliema, Malta in 1979) is a professional Irish singer-songwriter from Galway but based in Dublin. Much of his success has come in Ireland. Crowley was a late developer as a musician, having originally spent time on other pursuits, such as studying architecture, painting and photography. Alongside this he wrote songs but did not perform his first show until reaching the age of 25, some days after finding material he had written in the early 1990s in his attic. He departed from a career in photography around 2004 to enter the music profession on a full-time basis.

The Thrills are an Irish indie rock band, formed in 2001 in Dublin, Ireland. The band was founded by lead vocalist Conor Deasy and guitarist Daniel Ryan, guitarist and bass player Pádraic McMahon, pianist Kevin Horan and drummer Ben Carrigan. Their big break came with their debut album, So Much for the City, which became an Irish number one. The band’s sound has been described as “sun-drenched, inspired by classic American pop of the late ’60s and early ’70s”.

Mundy (born Edmund Enright in Birr, County Offaly) is an Irish singer-songwriter. “Mundy” is a nickname given to Enright, as it not only refers to his name Edmund, but it is how he pronounces the word “Mundy” (Monday??). He released his debut album Jellylegs in 1996 on the Epic Records label. The album included the song “To You I Bestow”, which was featured on the bestselling soundtrack to Baz Luhrmann’s film adaptation Romeo + Juliet. Villagers are an Irish band from Malahide, Dublin fronted by Conor J. O’Brien. They have performed at several music festivals and toured with Tracy Chapman and Tindersticks. Villagers gave their first live performance as a support act with Halves at a show in Whelan’s in November 2008. At that point the band had previously only rehearsed together on two occasions. They had only seven songs, written by O’Brien and passed on to the rest of the band to learn. Check out O’Brien’s performance at this year’s Inspirations gig charity for Barretstown.

Welcome to another week of Video Fight Club - where 2 videos pull out the punches all day to be the last one standing and be crowned Video Of The Day.
Seeing as its St Patricks Day we feel two Irish bands would be suitable for today’s Fight Club. Both from north and south of the border, they have each gained enormous international success and continue to grow in popularity.
In the left corner we have Dublin lads The Script with hit song Before the Worst, the group’s self titled debut album went multi platinum for selling more than 600,000 copies.
In the right corner we have Snow Patrol with Open Your Eyes, the band have received a lot of attention with hit songs such as Run, Chasing Cars and Signal fire. Their second album Eyes Open sold 4.7 million copies worldwide making them one of the biggest selling acts of the noughties.
Who will really have the luck of the Irish? The decision is in your hands so vote now!
