The song was originally planned to be the first release from the album, however, the making of the video was delayed meaning that the song will now after the release of the Christina Perri track "A Thousand Years".

Bruno Mars has said that his track for the upcoming Twilight: Breaking Dawn soundtrack will show the "darker side of love". The singer added, "It Will Rain' started off with me and the guitar and I just had this melody in my head and basically laid it down after I saw the film."
