Grimes official music video for Oblivion. Oblivion is a song performed by Grimes. Grimes, aka Claire Boucher, serenades us from the most unlikeliest of places in her new music video for dreamscape tune ‘Oblivion’. Directed by friend Emily Kai Bock and cinematographer Evan Profofsky, Boucher appears in the cheap seats as motorbike rallies, American Football matches and cheerleader dramatics unfold behind her in the background. With slow motion graphics of cheerleaders and bikers flying through the air, the avant-garde electro-pop song takes on a dreamy art-house documentary quality. The impromptu nature of the Grimes video gives it an added touch of humour as the adjacent biker fans appear distracted by the ensuing camerawork. Lots of ‘woo-hooing’ and ‘yeah baby-ing’ incurs which adds to the videos charm. The male machismo subject matter contrasts with the sweet-as-you-like pink-haired elfin Grimes and the song itself sounds like a cross between a Soft Cell number and Cyndi Lauper of ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ fame. At one random point the cute Boucher is seen in the male locker-room while shirtless men mosh beside her. This is bedroom pop singing-into-your-hairbrush type stuff ad seen through the wide-framed glasses of the Pitchfork era. Oblivion appears on Grimes’ album Visions released on 12 March 2012 on the 4AD label, the prolific artist’s fourth release in two years. The album draws inspiration from an eclectic range of influences as wide as Enya, TLC and Aphex Twin, whilst also drawing from genres like New Jack Swing, IDM, New Age, K-pop, Industrial and glitch.
