Barretstown song iTunes after 10,000 YouTube views
Song and video mark 20th anniversary of children’s charity
Friday February 21:A SONG by a group of campers from Barretstown, the camp for children and families affected by childhood cancer and other serious illness, is being made available to buy on iTunes after the video of it got over 10,000 views on YouTube in just five days. ‘Dream Baby Dream’ for Barretstown can be viewed on Barretstown’s YouTube channel at youtube.com/Barretstown.
Dream Baby Dream, a song made famous by Bruce Springsteen, was released on YouTube last weekend to mark the 20th anniversary of Barretstown. It has received support from celebrities such as Nicky Byrne of Westlife, former footballer Paul McGrath, Irish rugby internationals Gordon Darcy and Rob Kearney and media personalities Miriam O’Callaghan and Matt Cooper, all of whom tweeted or re-tweeted links to the song in the past few days.
The performance was recorded earlier this month at Barretstown, which has provided therapeutic recreation or “serious fun” for over 27,000 campers since its foundation by the actor Paul Newman in 1994. It features dozens of current and former Barretstown campers led by Joyce Murphy, who attended a Barretstown camp after her sister Rachel died of cancer in 2004. They are assisted by the Christ Church Cathedral Girls Choir and a number of other well-known musicians including Tom Dunne, Mundy and Steve Wall.
“We chose this song because of the absolute simplicity and positivity of the lyrics, and the quiet uplifting nature of the melody, which seem to capture the Barretstown spirit”, according to Barretstown CEO Dee Ahearn. “We are thrilled that it seems to have caught public imagination so well.”
Barretstown provides residential camps and Hospital Outreach services for children undergoing treatment for cancer and other serious illnesses, and their families. While there is an average of three children diagnosed with a childhood cancer each week, the five year survival rate for these children is now over 80%. “ The improvement in survival rates is due to the wonders of medical science with more and more advanced treatment resulting in a cure or long-term remission for a substantial proportion of children with a cancer”, according to Dee Ahearn.
“But survival is often at the price of intensive and long-term treatment which significantly disrupts the normal developmental process which we all go through in childhood. So the work of Barretstown has assumed more and more importance. Here we work to protect and repair the childhoods of children who have had their lives disrupted by illness. “This song captures the resilience and optimism that our campers and their families have shown in the 20 years since we opened our doors, and we are very proud of what they have done”, said Ms Ahearn.
The video was produced by Gary Cohen and directed by Shimmy Marcus. The song was recorded by Andy Knightley and Gavin Glass.
