Featuring on her second studio album, A Girl like Me (2006) is a song by Barbadian R&B singer Rihanna. ‘SOS’ was released on 27 March 2006 as the lead single from the album. "SOS" is a dance-pop and R&B song with elements of dance music, and contains a musical sample of "Tainted Love" written by Ed Cobb in 1965 and made famous by electro-pop group Soft Cell. "SOS" received favourable reviews by the critics with the majority of music critics praising the inclusion of the "Tainted Love" sample. Some compared "SOS" to Rihanna's debut single "Pon de Replay". "SOS" had three separate promotional music videos developed upon its release, each serving a different purpose. In addition to the official music video, another version was shot as part of a promotional campaign for lingerie brand Agent Provocateur, whilst another was shot for a Nike campaign. The official music video and Nike versions were directed by Chris Applebaum, who later directed the music video for Rihanna’s break-away hit single "Umbrella" which features on her 2007 album release ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’. The Chipettes covered the song for the 2011 film Alvin and the ‘Chipmunks: Chipwrecked’ and its soundtrack.
