The fantastic music video for ‘Where Have You Been’ is directed by Dave Meyers who is known for his distinct visual style which has attracted recruitment from the likes of Pink, Britney and Katy Perry in the past. The video starts with a shot of Rihanna rising out of a dank and dreary swamp like a primordial fish-woman, the swamp thing then evolves into a cave dweller who breaks into a high-energy Flintstone-style dance routine. This is a far stretch from the previous music videos for ‘S&M’, ‘Umbrella’ and ‘Cheers (Drink To That)’ and it allows Rihanna to showcase her multiple talents as a performer.
