Written by American singer-songwriter Bruno Mars with Phiilip Lawrence, Ari Levine and Andrew Wyatt, and produced by The Smeezingtons. 'When I Was Your Man' was scheduled to be the third promotional single from his second studio album 'Unorthodox Jukebox,' and was released on 3rd December 2012. However, after performing the song live on the Jimmy Kimmel Live chatshow a week later, he revealed that it was the second single of the album, following up the smash-hit 'Locked Out Of Heaven'.
'When I Was Your Man' is a step removed from his usual up-beat and pacey retro-pop. A slow, bare piano ballad, the lyrics lament his own personal braek-up with a girl, who appears intermitantley during the video, that he wrong-treated. Mars sings how he was "too young, too dumb to realize" and how he "shoulda bought you flowers," giving a sorrowful account of how he was ignorant enough to let her get away.
This simple music video sees him on TV-set stage, twinkling softly on a grand-piano while singing through a list of all the things he should have done to keep his unnamed ex. The hurt on his face is clear to see when we hear of the pain he went through after losing her. 'When I Was Your Man' is Bruno Mars' very own, heartfelt break-up song.
