How She Grew in the Industry

Anjelica is a representation of how far perseverance and passion can take a person. She has been pursuing her acting dreams relentlessly backed by natural expressiveness and the confidence of technical knowledge.

Anjelica knocked on many doors to advocate for herself for where she wants to be.

While talking about the journey of evolving and learning as an actress, Anjelica traces her story from trying to fit into the mold of a dancer to discovering and improving her strengths as she delivers her role in ‘Teenage Bounty Hunters’ (a recent comedy series by Kathleen Jordan) playing Blair Wesley.

In the movie, Blair and Sterling (played by Maddie Phillips) were 16-year old fraternal twin sisters who teamed up with Bowser Jenkins (played by Kadeem Hardison), a veteran bounty hunter.

The movie is on Netflix and is touted to be the next step in Anjelica’s blooming career.

Anjelica spoke about her character’s arc in an interview with 1883. She also highlighted her personal growth and transition to TV and films from the stage among other things she discussed.

When asked whether she was naturally attracted to roles that deal with catching bad guys and fighting crime as portrayed in ‘Bounty Hunter’ and ‘The Gifted’, Anjelica said the roles are the ones attracted to her.

According to her, she has auditioned for many non-action movies in the past but she was not chosen in the long run. The reverse is the case for action roles that just fall into her lap.

She attributed this to being a dancer. She then mentioned how she was able to maneuver the action sequence during her audition for ‘The Gifted’. She feels that her dancing background enables her body to bring those action characters to life and make them believable. So it is natural for her.

Below is a list of other questions she was asked during the interview and the answers to those questions.

Question: What can you say about your character Blair’s growth and arc in the show?

Answer: Blair is linked to her sister, Sterling in a tactic way, but she feels quite ostracized by her school and parents. She often feels like she does not fit in; I discussed this with the showrunner in mid-season.

One would hardly see Blair relate with anyone in her school, she doesn’t text anyone either except Miles (played by Myle Evans).

This stunted her growth, but she later learned more about her self-worth in the final episodes. Blair also learned about why she is being treated in a particular way and that her family took faith in her more than her expectation.

For the first time, Blair has also fallen in love because she got attention from outside her immediate family. Blair’s arc required her to learn to love herself more and have less expectation of validation from others.

Question: Blair, your character is described as non-conformist, opinionated, and outspoken. To what extent do you think that your personality traits ally with Blair’s?

Answer: People often use words like dramatic, opinionated, and loud to describe me which are like Blair’s, although there are certain differences.

Blair lives in the moment and is usually excited while I on the other hand tend to be calm. I read a Meryl Streep quote that speaks about how I feel about Blair. It’s hard for me to separate myself from all the characters I play as they end up becoming a part of me. I am certainly different from Blair, but I cannot separate or nitpick our traits.

Question: did you perhaps add anything that was not in the script to the Blair character?

Answer: I brought many things about me into Blair. There was something in my life related to the character’s story. Almost around the time Blair had a break up in the story, I also had a breakup. I do not feel that it is a coincidence.

When asked about the most difficult part of owning Blair’s mindset, Anjelica said that it was almost therapeutic and easy for her because she has passed through the age. She added that she could not have played the character if she was sixteen.

Although she admitted to being bothered and feared what people would say, say she still tried so much to fit in.

Her funniest memories while filming the show were when Maddie fall after she tripped. Anjelica also stated that rejection has made her stronger and that she now has a dream of going back to theatre after succeeding in film and TV.

According to Anjelica, the most memorable of her career so far was her role in Teenage Bounty.
