The hit song, ‘Way Cool Jr’, was a single that was put out by an American heavy metal band that was known as Ratt.  It was actually the third hit single that was off of their ‘Reach for the Sky’ album, which was released during the height of the heavy metal era of music back in 1988.  It was such a big hit that it was actually able to reach the 75 spot on the Billboard hot 100.  The song was basically about a charismatic, handsome young man who was simply living the high life, but while dealing with an addiction to some very illicit drugs.  ‘Way Cool Jr’ would end up becoming one of Ratt’s greatest hits and they are still remembered for it to this day.  In fact, when most people will bring up the song as one of the main ones that they remember whenever you ask them about the heavy metal band Ratt.

Who Was Ratt?

Ratt, the band that brought everyone many different hit singles, one of the main ones being ‘Way Cool Jr’, was a heavy metal band that skyrocketed to success during the heavy metal era of music.  They had tons of commercial success throughout the 80’s, having their albums become certified as either gold, platinum, and even multi-platinum through the RIAA.

Perhaps best known for all of the hit singles that they released over the span of their run, some of the other hits besides ‘Way Cool Jr’ include the hits ‘Lay it Down’ and ‘Round and Round’, which each of these tracks would end up landing on the Billboard Top 40.  Some of their other hit singles that include, ‘You’re in Love’, ‘Wanted Man’, and ‘Dance’, have also reached rankings on the list as well.

Was Ratt Considered ‘Hair Metal’?

Very similar to some of the other heavy metal bands of the time, Ratt, alongside some of the other groups such as Motley Crue, would be recognized as one of the more instrumental bands that were involved in the formation of the Los Angeles glam metal scene in the beginning of the 1980s.  This scene, which was also referred to as ‘hair metal’ or even ‘pop metal’, would end up taking Ratt and other heavy metal bands into the national spotlight, eventually causing the start of the heavy metal era that took place during the 1980s and early 1990s.

If you think that Ratt faded out when the heavy metal era of music faded out, you would be mistaken.  In fact, even though there were some extended hiatuses and some line-up changes along the way, Ratt would actually continue to record studio albums and even tour around the country for many years to come.  The last album that Ratt released was called ‘Infestation’ and was released on April 20, 2010.  While the heavy metal scene is not quite the same as it used to be, there is no replacing the classic metal bands that helped shape heavy metal for future generations and Ratt was one of those bands.
